Aachener Printen. Hard or soft? Small or big?

Aachener Printen are a delightful specialty from Aachen. The recipe, which has been passed on from generation to generation, is a carefully guarded secret. They are produced with dark flour, three dark sugars and exotic spices. When baking the dough, the sugar caramelizes and the Printen become crusty. We offer hard and soft Printen as well. To guide you through the selection process we would like to explicate the various types of Printen. Every Printe contains the same basic dough.

Original Aachener Printen

Classic Printen are crunchy. We offer them with or without chocolade, hazelnuts or almonds and also in multiple sizes. Hart Printen are more economical than soft Printen because production is less complex and requires less time and therefore is less expensive. If you prefer the crunchy Printen soft, store them in humid air, for example keep them together with a piece of apple in a tin box. We make sure the bottom side is not covered with chocolate so a humid climate makes these Printen softer. A specialty within hard Printen is PRINtillo® , our crunchy sticks as special treat for young and old alike.

Soft Printen

Our Printen are traditionally crafted and therefore get soft just by storing them in humid air – no additives are needed. Soft Printen are covered in chocolate all around, this way they stay soft. The idea is to retain the moisture inside and prevent them from hardening. A specialty within soft Printen is Printenkonfekt: Small pieces of Soft Printen with almond slivers and chocolate.

Spitzkuchen

A gingerbread-like bisquit containing shortening, eggs and raisins alongside typical Printen Spices. Completely covered with dark chocolate Spitzkuchen is a culinary delight as well.
